Biscuit was a small golden puppy with one floppy ear, and tonight was a very big night. It was his first night ever in his brand-new home.
His new family had given him a soft round bed, a bowl with his name on it, and a squeaky toy shaped like a duck. Biscuit loved all of it.
But when the lights went out, the new house was full of new sounds.
Tick, tock, went something in the hallway. Biscuit’s floppy ear popped up. “Who is that?” he wondered. It was only the clock, counting the night like sheep.
Hummmmm, went something in the kitchen. Biscuit’s nose wiggled. “Who is THAT?” It was only the refrigerator, singing to the leftovers.
Creeeeak, went the stairs, all by themselves. “Oh dear,” whispered Biscuit, and he hid his nose under his paw. Houses stretch at night, just like puppies do. But Biscuit didn’t know that yet.
Then Biscuit heard footsteps — soft ones, in socks. It was Sam, the littlest boy in his new family, holding his pillow.
“Hi, Biscuit,” Sam whispered. “I heard you whimpering. First nights are hard. I know all about them.”
Sam lay down on the floor right next to the round puppy bed. “Want to know a secret? When everything sounds new, you find the heartbeat sound. Listen.”
Biscuit snuggled close to Sam and put his floppy ear against him. And there it was: bum-bum… bum-bum… bum-bum. Steady and warm, like a small drum saying you’re home, you’re home, you’re home.
Biscuit listened. The tick-tock clock joined in. The humming fridge joined in. Even the creaky stairs settled down to listen. All the new sounds were just the house’s way of saying goodnight.
Biscuit’s eyes got heavy. His floppy ear flopped all the way down. His tail gave one last sleepy wag — thump — like a period at the end of a very good day.
And that is how Biscuit fell asleep on his very first night: one boy, one puppy, and one heartbeat saying you’re home, you’re home, you’re home.
Shhh. Can you hear your heartbeat too? It’s saying the very same thing.
🌙 The End 🌙
Sweet dreams, little one.
