Bedtime Stories for 4 Year Olds
The best bedtime stories for 4 year olds have a small problem, a few tries at solving it, and a warm, safe answer at the end. Four-year-olds can sit through a slightly longer story than toddlers, usually four or five minutes read slowly, and they enjoy patterns they can predict: a search that goes from place to place, or a question asked three times.
Between three and five, fear of the dark is at its strongest. A good story names that feeling kindly and gives the child something to hold on to, like a light, a slow breath or a friend close by, without adding any new worries.
The Dragon Who Was Afraid of the Dark does exactly that: an old dragon shows little Pebble that he carries a light inside him. In The Star That Wanted a Blanket, a chilly star named Twink tries a cloud and then the wind before her friends gather around to keep her warm. The Kitten Who Couldn’t Find Her Purr is a gentle hunt under the sofa and in the laundry basket that ends in a warm lap.
