One clear night, a star fell out of the sky.
It did not fall fast, the way you might think. It drifted down slow and wobbly, like a leaf, and landed with a tiny plink in the middle of Sorrel the dragon’s favourite meadow.
Sorrel was a green dragon with soft, mossy scales, and she was just about to go to sleep. But when she saw the little glow in the grass, she padded over to look.
The star was very small — no bigger than a button — and it was shivering.
“Hello,” said Sorrel gently. “Are you lost?”
“I fell,” whispered the star. “I was leaning over to see the fireflies, and I leaned too far. Now I can’t get back up, and my sisters will wonder where I’ve gone.”
Sorrel looked up at the sky. It was very, very high.
“I could carry you,” she said. “I have wings.”
“But I’m so far from home,” said the star.
“Then we’d better start,” said Sorrel.
She cupped the little star in her front paws — carefully, carefully — and spread her wings, and pushed off from the meadow.
Up she went, past the tops of the trees where the owls were nodding. “Goodnight, owls,” said Sorrel.
Up past the hill where the sheep slept in a woolly heap. “Goodnight, sheep.”
Up past the clouds, which were soft and cool and smelled like rain that hadn’t happened yet. “Goodnight, clouds.”
The star grew warmer in her paws the higher they flew, like a small candle that had remembered it was a candle.
At last, when the air was thin and quiet and full of sparkle, Sorrel stopped. All around her, thousands of stars hung in the dark like lanterns.
“There!” cried the little star. “There’s my place — that empty spot, right beside the two bright ones!”
Sorrel opened her paws, and the little star floated up, and slotted back into the sky with a happy little click.
“Thank you, dragon,” it called. “I’ll shine extra bright for you tonight.”
And it did.
Sorrel glided all the way home, down past the clouds, past the sheep, past the owls, and landed soft as a feather in her meadow. She curled her tail around her nose and closed her eyes.
High above, one small star twinkled just a little brighter than the rest.
Look out your window tonight. Can you find it?
🌙 The End 🌙
Sweet dreams, little one.
