Long, long ago, in a green valley full of ferns, lived a very little dinosaur named Tiny.
Tiny was the smallest dinosaur in the whole valley. Her stomps were tiny. Her roars were tiny. Even her sneezes were tiny — achoo! — like a little bell.
But Tiny had one big thing. A very, very big yawn.
One evening, when the sky turned the color of peaches, Tiny felt her big yawn coming. Her mouth opened wiiiiide. “Yaaaaawwwwn,” went Tiny.
Her friend Bump the triceratops saw it. And do you know what happened? Bump’s mouth opened wide too. “Yaaaaawwwwn,” went Bump. “Oh my,” he said, blinking slowly. “Your yawn hopped right into my mouth!”
Bump’s yawn floated over to Stretch, the long-neck dinosaur, who was nibbling the tippy-top leaves of a tree. “Yaaaaaaaawwwwn,” went Stretch, and her long neck swayed like a sleepy swing. “Goodness,” she mumbled. “Now it’s got me.”
The yawn drifted down to the river, where Snap the crocodile was floating like a log. Snap opened his great big mouth — and instead of a chomp, out came the gentlest “yaaaawwwn” the river had ever heard. All his teeth smiled sleepily at the moon.
The yawn bounced to the pterodactyls in the trees, and one by one they tucked their heads under their wings. It rolled over to the stegosaurus family, and all their back-plates drooped like sleepy flowers.
Soon the whole valley was yawning. The ferns yawned. The river yawned. Even the volcano gave one warm, rumbly yawn and puffed out a smoke ring shaped like a pillow.
Tiny looked around at her sleepy valley and felt very proud. Her stomps were tiny. Her roars were tiny. But her yawn had tucked in every single dinosaur she loved.
She curled up in her nest of soft ferns, right between Mama’s front feet, where it was warmest.
“Goodnight, Tiny,” whispered Mama. “That was your biggest yawn yet.”
Tiny smiled with her eyes already closed. And somewhere far away, on the other side of the valley, one last little “yaaawn” floated up to the stars.
Watch out — Tiny’s yawn is very catching. Did it hop into your mouth yet?
🌙 The End 🌙
Sweet dreams, little one.
