Marmalade was a small orange kitten with white socks and one crooked whisker.
She could do almost everything a kitten should do. She could pounce on a leaf. She could climb halfway up a curtain, which is the hard half. She could fall asleep in a patch of sun in under four seconds.
But Marmalade could not purr.
Her brothers purred. Her sister purred so loudly she rattled. Even the big old cat next door purred like a lawnmower. But when Marmalade tried, all that came out was a small squeak.
“Where is it?” she wondered. “My purr must be somewhere.”
She looked under the sofa, where lost things go. She found a bottle cap, a hair ribbon, and a very surprised spider. No purr.
She looked in her food bowl, in case it had fallen in. She found three crunchy bits, which she ate, just to be sure. No purr.
She looked inside her favorite shoe. She looked behind the flowerpot. She climbed into the laundry basket and burrowed all the way to the bottom, which is a very good place for a purr to hide.
No purr anywhere.
By evening Marmalade was tired and dusty and a little bit sad. She padded into the living room, where the girl who lived in the house was reading a book in the big soft chair.
The girl looked down. “There you are,” she said, and lifted Marmalade up, and settled her right in the warm dip of her lap.
She scratched exactly the right spot behind Marmalade’s ears — the spot no kitten can reach by herself.
Marmalade closed her eyes. The lamp was gold. The chair was soft. The girl smelled like toast and rain.
And then, from somewhere deep inside her, something started up. Small at first. Then rounder. Then rumbly and warm and steady, like a tiny engine, like a bee in a jar, like a little heart with a song in it.
Purrrrrrrrr.
“There it is!” whispered Marmalade. “It was inside me the whole time. It was just waiting to be happy.”
The girl smiled and turned a page, and Marmalade purred and purred until her eyes grew too heavy to keep open.
And that is how a small orange kitten with one crooked whisker fell asleep — warm, and held, and full of the sound she had been looking for all day.
Can you hear it? Purrrrrrrrr. Let it get slower… and slower… and softer… until it fades away into sleep.
🌙 The End 🌙
Sweet dreams, little one.
