Way, way up in the night sky, higher than the birds, higher than the clouds, higher than airplanes even, lived a little star named Twink.
Twink loved her job. Every night she switched on her light — blink, blink — and sparkled for all the children down below.
But one night, Twink felt something new. “Brrr,” she said. “It is chilly all the way up here. I wish I had a blanket, like the children have.”
The Moon heard her. The Moon hears everything, because the night is very quiet. “A blanket for a star?” said the Moon in his slow, kind voice. “Let us see what we can find.”
First, a soft grey cloud floated by. “Try me!” puffed the cloud, and it wrapped itself around Twink. But the cloud covered up her sparkle, and down below, a little girl at her window said, “Where did that star go?” So the cloud floated on. That wouldn’t do.
Next came the wind. “I will tuck you in!” whooshed the wind. But the wind could not hold still — it tickled and swirled and made Twink giggle instead of sleep. That wouldn’t do either.
Then the Moon had an idea. He called softly across the sky: “Stars! Little Twink is chilly. Come close, everyone. Come close.”
And from every corner of the sky, the stars began to drift over. Big stars and small stars, silver stars and gold ones, all snuggling in around Twink — closer, and closer, and closer — until the sky right around her was one warm, glowing, twinkling quilt of starlight.
“Ohhh,” whispered Twink. “A blanket made of friends.”
It was the warmest blanket in the whole universe. And here is the secret: it did not hide her sparkle at all. It made it bigger. Down below, the little girl at her window pointed and said, “Look! That’s the brightest, coziest corner of the sky!”
The Moon smiled and dimmed himself down like a nightlight. “Goodnight, little Twink,” he said. “Goodnight, stars.”
And Twink, tucked into her blanket of friends, gave one last sleepy blink, blink — and fell fast asleep, right in the middle of the sky.
If you look out your window tonight, find the coziest, twinkliest corner of the sky. That’s Twink and her blanket — and they’re wishing you a warm goodnight, too.
🌙 The End 🌙
Sweet dreams, little one.
